Greek rock artist O KANENAS closes his powerful LP Godless with the striking final track of the same name — a heavy rock composition in 9/8 that blends raw energy, folk tradition, and lyrical depth.
Opening with atmospheric drones inspired by Byzantine church music and Greek folk traditions, Godless builds into a thunderous chorus where guitars carry the drone motif into open, expansive harmonies. The song’s unusual time signature and key changes amplify its intensity, channeling both the timeless pulse of folk heritage and the urgency of modern rock rebellion.
Lyrically, Godless confronts societal hypocrisy — when piety is wielded as a tool for personal ambition rather than genuine belief. With cutting lines like “giving land for shiny beads” (a nod to the colonization of the Americas) and “you kiss the hand you cannot cut and pray to God to break it” (an Arabic saying), O KANENAS challenges the listener to reject false morality and embrace an authentic, self-directed life.
“We want to break free from hypocrisy and find our own way into life without pretence,” says O KANENAS. “This is the concept of the whole album — finding your own way home, overcoming adversity, and daring to explore.”
The album Godless is a modern musical Odyssey, drawing on the epic journey of Odysseus as a metaphor for human perseverance, empowerment, and rebellion against oppressive forces. From the defiant Stick it to the Man (referencing Odysseus blinding the Cyclops) to the turbulent Shut Up and Row, the reflective Become, and the storm-driven Grab the Wind, each track chronicles a stage in the struggle to reclaim freedom and identity.
The LP was written and produced entirely by O KANENAS, with drums by Richard Orpheus Campbell (who based his parts on a pattern developed by Ed Burns) and bass contributions from Kostis Ilias on select tracks. Guitars and vocals were performed by O KANENAS.
With Godless, O KANENAS merges storytelling, tradition, and heavy rock firepower into a bold statement — one that invites listeners to chart their own course, no matter how rough the seas.
