Brazilian band Inimigos do Rei is set to release their new single, “Medo” (Fear), a track that will be part of their upcoming show, “Vem Kafka comigo!” (Come Kafka with me!). With music by Marcus Lyrio and lyrics by Luiz Guilherme, the song cleverly transforms the anxiety of month-end financial struggles into sharp satire, maintaining humor as a tool of resistance.
According to vocalist and composer Luiz Guilherme, the lyrics emerged organically as “a natural response to the social and financial issues experienced daily by all Brazilians.” Originally written in 2006, the song was born during a personal moment of economic pressure. “I was starting my second marriage, living in a rented apartment, and my daughter was attending a private university. In other words, the end of the month was a very real fear,” he recalls.
Guilherme describes the composition as a “vertical” lyric, capable of cutting across social, cultural, and political layers. “It’s the fear of not having money to get through the end of the month. Whether it’s stretching your salary, running out of allowance, or postponing bills. Who hasn’t felt that?” he states. For him, it’s “a humorous and universal reaction to today’s world, which demands challenging monetary performances from all of us.”
Inimigos do Rei’s lineup includes Luiz Guilherme (vocals, composer), Luiz Nicolau (vocals), Lourival Franco (keyboards), Marcelo Crelier (bass), Marcelo Marques (drums), and Marcus Lyrio (guitar).
The track “Medo” directly dialogues with the concept of the band’s new show, which translates the collective unconscious of a plural country that fears not having the resources to pay its own bills. First performed at Circo Voador in 2006, the song resurfaced during the band’s return.
In 2025, while revisiting lyrics and ideas during their comeback process, the song received a new production, signed by Bruno Costa and Vini Lobo. The track is now available on all streaming platforms.
