The“prophets of girlhood”have arrived ★★ ★ massie99 is here to make you blush, steal your crush, and idk something else that rhymes with “ush”? gush? Anyway... Since forming the band in January 2023, massie99 has quickly become one of the most popular up-and- coming bands in Nashville.
The trio’ has worked closely with producer Jared Corder (*repeat repeat, The Sewing Club, Jive Talk) to record their debut album, including lead single “Anika”. “Anika” is one minute and thirty-five seconds of high-speed cheerleader vocals and grungy distortion. It tells the true story of a girl who returned to Dani’s high school with shameless hickeys from a Swedish summer fling.
The band takes inspiration from the riot grrrl movement, Liz Phair, and Hole, as well as current Nashville punk artists like Snooper. After realizing the profound lack of all-girl bands in Nashville and the greater music scene, Grace, Grayson, and Dani decided to fill the void. During their energetic live shows, the girls trade instruments (though Dani is the only one who can really play drums), sing in three-part harmony, and incorporate skits that often involve a cardboard cutout of 2010s teen heartthrob Nick Jonas. massie99 looks forward to the release of the rest of their music, which shares themes of girlhood experiences, homoerotic friendships, and feminine dreams, often through a lens of satire.
